This is how it looks to always be, and why not! Dragons need this purpose, as it is proven many times over in history. Yet, it seems it is a waning threat, as the star passes once again. Thread falls less often all the time now, and clutches are becoming smaller. A time of easy breathing is on its way. Or is it? In these smaller clutches though, some odd dragons have appeared. Female bronzes are just the start, what will come from this last clutch of Viriths? Because this surely is her last clutch, the great golden queen lies dead from a thread fall tragedy. Something happened last thread fall, the last queen made her flight as it fell. It wasn't that the queen was ignorant to the thread fall, the thread was not meant to fall at that time. Something made the threads fall irregularly, not that that hadn't happened in the history of Pern before, but it wasn't something that was expected. Not only did it fall out of pattern, it fell in the wrong area of Pern than expected. It should have fallen closer to the south, not so far to the west. The bronzes should have been fighting thread, but that instinct to fly the queen was stronger, and that urge took over. Thus Benecio dealt with a tragedy it was not accustomed to. Leaving Benecio to deal with the thread that fell and destroyed most everything. At least everything around Benicio Weyr was in ruins. The browns, greens, and blues still fought, but with only the high level wing and with how erratically the threads fell, it was a dismal day for the Weyr. The other dragons flew to fight thread, they returned thread scored and injured to the point where many of them were out of action for a while. And with only one wing, only a rough third of crops managed to be saved by the ground crew. All the burrows were found and burned out. The queen was flown by the bronze who caught her, but when the flight was over and she came back, she was badly thread scored. It effected the clutch severely. Many of the eggs were either too large or too small, 7 eggs in total there were, one could have passed as a gold, it surely looked like a gold, but it was not laid aside from the rest of the eggs. It was laid among them like it was any other egg. The queen herself passed days before the hatching, and her opaque body lay near the eggs of the sands, an ever silent sentinel of the last clutch she bore. Today is the hatching, and no one knows what to expect. The Weyrwoman is devastated by the loss of her dragon, and the Weyrleader was driven to suicide, flying with his dragon between, never to return. With the death of Virith there is no queen in the Weyr. If that glimmering egg is not a Gold, the Wyer will be for the first time in it's history, queenless. The entire Weyr is mourning the loss of their queen, and many are hopeful that the egg that seems like a potential queen, will indeed be the answers to their hopes. But a call for a transfer has been mad as well. For no weyrling could lead the Weyr from hatching. Add in the struggle for survival as Benecio weyr has lost its only gold and oldest bronze, and you have it! This is Benecio weyr, located on the Western coast. Can it cope with the deaths they have suffered? What happens when thread falls again? Will the transfer queen be the answer? Or will that glimmering egg that keeps everyones hopes from plummeting? The History and Setting of Carew Weyr Carew Weyr was established towards the end of the first interval, shortly after Benden, High Reaches and Telgar. In our setting, Ista Weyr does not exist and Carew Weyr was founded in its place. Likewise, Ista Hold does not exist. Instead the principle hold is Carew Hold. When Carew Weyr was established, its construction utilized the last of the energy of the ancients' rock cutting equipment, which enabled quite spacious and comfortable accommodations. Since Carew Weyr is located where Ista Weyr would be in the published novels, it enjoys the same tropical type of climate. There are basically two seasons; the hot season and the rainy one. Since our timeline starts during the end of the First Long Interval prior to the Fifth pass of the Red Star, AIVAS has not been found (nor will it be), none of the events of the 9th pass have taken place, and green dragons impressing to women is neither unheard of nor uncommon. During the preceding turns, Pern has been enjoying the first of the prolonged intervals; four hundred long turns during which the Red Star has passed out of Pern’s orbit and Thread has not fallen upon the planet. Because of this, Thread is viewed at worst, as a myth, and at best, as a threat no longer. Only the most traditional and stalwart holders and craftsmen believe that the Threads will return. Even some dragonmen have become convinced that Thread is no more. At this time, several factors have converged to put the future of the Weyrs and indeed, all of Pern, in grave peril. Due to the long interval, the Lord Holders are disgruntled at tithing to their beholden weyr. Such tithes have become skimpy and in some cases, have fallen off altogether. Dragonriders have fallen into planet-wide disfavor and are not being accorded the courtesies which were prevalent during earlier times. Most recently, in turn 1255, three turns before the pass is due to start, a virulent plague has swept through the populace and decimated the ranks of Dragonriders. Though the illness was not often fatal to humans, it happened to be one of the few zoonotic diseases which could affect dragons as well as people and it hit the dragon population far harder than the humans. Many of Pern’s great dragons were killed by the illness, with the disease hitting those in the prime of their lives the hardest. Worse, of those Queens that are left after the plague, many have not risen in mating flights, though in the prime of their lives and are feared to be sterile. It is believed that those Queens who were but mildly stricken with the plague are still fertile, but no one knows what strange effects, if any, the illness will have upon future generations. The only thing that has possibly saved the dragon population is that just before the plaque hit, several clutches were laid, and several of them with Queen eggs. Now, mid way through turn 1256, the plague has finally dwindled to an end, leaving the weyrs demoralized and filled with such ex-riders as did not suicide when their dying dragons went between and the grieving families, friends, weyrmates and lovers of those riders who could not bear life without their beloved lifemates. Will the Weyr and indeed, all of Pern, be able to recover from the Plague before thread returns in less than 2 turns? That is the challenge which hangs over Carew Weyr as the residents struggle to regroup from the terrible tragedy which befell them. ~Current Events~ ~Shayeth's oddly colored Gold egg hatched out twin Amber dragonets, presumably due to genetic aberration from the plague which affected their mother. These little beauties are unmistakeably of Gold heritage but with a curious green sheen over their bodies. They are assumed to have all the other characteristics of Gold dragons but until the twins rise to mate for the first time, it will not be known for certain. What other surprises will the plague have in store for Pern, if any? ~A Gold flight will occur as soon as we have enough bronze riders to make it interesting. ~A surprise plot event to keep things interesting will happen soon. ~A new pet will be discovered at Carew. A Pern that was overcome by corruption and greed after generations of the Red Star being knocked out of orbit. A Pern where the Government strapped remotely detonated bombs to firelizards and sent them on their trusting way and sanctioned the destruction of the whers. Where a Government asked for a more easily controlled and violent dragon to use in their wars. And when they were rejected, executed the last of the Dragons and Riders in front of the world. This was the planet that the Resistance and all involved, left behind. And it is on Oren, after more than ten years in the journey and two in the building after that, that their story continues. Our story continues. Where lives have been re-built and the memories of the ruined Pern serve as the brutal reminder of how such insatiability and greed can destroy us all. On Oren, with the Base flourishing and Viento Weyr completed and industrious, the eggs are finally out of deep stasis and are continuing to safely harden on the Sands. Yet there's an underlying fear spreading dangerously throughout Base. A dismembered body was found raped, mutilated, wrapped up in a tarp, and tossed down a well. If you do join, say Blanch sent ya ^_~ History: It is not know when Baikal was created, or why, but during the reign of Z'llien and Bronze Aykawth no one could prepare the small Southern weyr for the tragic events coming ever so closer to them. The fateful day came during the late afternoon; dragon's eyesight were poor but their instincts told them thread was near, and near it was. The fall happened to be right over the ill-prepared weyr; as dragon wings tried to lift up into the air to fight their enemy, they lifted right into patches of thread and their injuries were so great that many betweened in the blink of an eye. Those who managed to get into the air and fight, were soon over-taxed. The whers tried their best but with a full wing of wherlings, they had little numbers to help with either eating the thread or flaming it (the few that had mastered the technique). When night came and went, the sunrise of the next day showed the true extent of the damage. Many lives were lost, Lord Holder Kyoden's wife Taryn was one of the fatalities as well as the senior queen dragon of Baikal. As if threadfall had done enough damage, it was like that was not enough for living in Southern. A horrible and quick illness spread over the weyr and hold not but maybe a few months later. What little numbers survived the Fall had yet another battle to fight. Weyrlings and wherlings were lost. Gold Tyiask and late Bronze Arrisk's clutches only had a few remaining children, one being sent over to Hethern to be their watchwher. Those that surpassed the illness had enough of the Southern Continent and moved back to the north, leaving poor Baikal deserted. Injured during the Fall and catching the illness as well, bronzerider Z'llien managed to survived both cataclysm events thanks to the healing skills of Goldhandler Tyiana. For a while it was just them, watching over Baikal in hopes that their former friends and family would return to the weyr. None did although a strangely colored wher made his appearance a month after Z'llien had pulled through. It had been six months by then since the Fall and four months since the illness. Serenade and copper Serensk kept Tyiana and Z'llien company until about a year after the deadly fall. That is when seven riders from High Reaches arrived and asked if they could take shelter here. The group included a gold, a copper, an ebony, a shadow, a green, and a blue. With the arrival of the gold, it meant that they would soon have new life growing about Baikal. Though the weyr was understaffed, what little family members that followed the former High Reaches riders, helped in every way they could. Lukreith rose, and bad luck was in it for Baikal once more. The queen could not be controlled by her rider; she was scared and blocked every one out, including her queen, and when the threat of loosing her gold made Kana try to control her but it was not to be. Lukreith ate meat and flew low and short with copper Zheniith. Their clutch produced 16 eggs, including the dark queen Arianth. A new queen meant new life, Lukreith was too badly injured during her flight to ever fly again let alone rise to mate. Arianth was their only hope. Or so Baikal had thought. Ebony Shivith and her sister Aeroth rose back to back, both producing 10 eggs and 1 queen egg. 22 eggs laid hardening on the sands and when they came to attach, no one was expect to have three queens, all silvers. Silver Siranrith, Silianth, and Sioth. It was about another turn later that High Reaches and Ista finally found the Southern Weyr. Ista's Lord Holder was out to bring his son back, and High Reaches wanted to dispose of all mutants, starting with the first hatched at their weyr; the four that resided now at Baikal. At the gather, Kyliee of Silver Sioth and J'ran of Bronze Gabranth were kidnapped and taken to Ista. Gold Tyiask and Bronze Kyodsk were fellised and once awoken, Tyiana and Tyiask set out to rescue the pair. She was instead captured herself and after Kyoden led an army of his troops, and Azael dead, were the three freed. While all of the drama from the kidnappings was going on, High Reaches managed to poison Baikal's Lake Lagow and the first dragon to fall ill was egg-heavy silver Siranrith; for she had risen during the gather and inadvertently gave the perfect cover for Azael and his men to capture the silver and bronze riders. Many of Siranrith's eggs were malformed or collapsed inside of themselves with a single touch. Only five made it to hatching day and that is when the illness began to spread through all the female dragons and fire-lizards. Whers were somehow spared and it is unknown why. When the source of the illness was found, everyone moved to find a new weyr. Avalon was their new refugee and soon the holdfolk of Hethern followed. Ebony Shivith and her rider, Ashllyn were too weak and sick to move and so it was thought they had died at Baikal, betweening one last time. Shivith and Ashllyn were not dead, instead Shivith brought them forward in time, by a "pull" as she described it. There, traders and holdless folk nursed the sick pair back to health. Ashllyn was driven nearly mad at the jump 100 turns into the future. And so they headed back, the dangerous jump could have killed them, but they made it home to three turns after Baikal had been deserted. They tested the water to see if it was poisoned and when neither one got sick, they concluded that the water was safe. Shivith tried to locate many of her family and friends, but the Ebony's attempts were futile. They have now set out on a mission to find Baikal's former residents and hopefully bring them back. Additional Comments: Newly re-opened! Baikal just needs some new members to breathe life into the place and spur us forward towards our first hatching! We need candidates! And any characters (non sport) beneath brown! Igen Searchriders are scouring Pern to find enough candidate to stand for Queen Viscayath's first clutch. Twenty one eggs lay in the sand before the queen, one of them a large, shimmering queen egg. That egg houses the first queen to hatch at Igen Weyr in fifty turns. We need boys and girls for Viscayath clutch. I would say more boys but females are welcome and accepted. There will be thread, there will be fire, but we NEED people to make it happen... History: AIVAS does not exist, and the dragons still fight thread. This is how it looks to always be, and why not! Dragons need this purpose, as it is proven many times over in history. Yet, it seems it is a waning threat, as the star passes once again. Thread falls less often all the time now, and clutches are becoming smaller. A time of easy breathing is on it's way. In these smaller clutches though, some odd dragons have appeared. Female bronzes, and small chromatics with only a hint of color. There seems to be nothing wrong with them, but with them only hailing from Ista and Alkmene Weyr, most are not sure what to make of them. Add in the struggle for survival as Alkmene weyr has lost several bronzes and one old gold, and you have it! This is Alkmene weyr, located on the northern coast. Can it outlast the fall? What drama will play out as the loss of bronzes and a queen affect everyone... Will this new gold and weyrwoman live up to what has been left to them? Will the Weyr survive pressure from Ista to disban as both numbers dwindle? Additional Comments: We need just about everything. From rankers to drudges, we need 'em! On this note, WE NEED CANDIDATES! We offer a chance to play a some fairly unique mutations, as well as the chance to have an open history.
