Site Name: Arolos Weyr URL: www.arolosweyr.co.ukServer: YahooGroups Are you the Admin?: Yes Admin identity:: shewhoguards Activity:: Very active! Info: Arolos Weyr is the Weyr that just kept going. Started in '99 it's been going from strength to strength ever since. With enough players to make play in all areas possible , we've got active wings and as much play for adult riders as for Candidates and Weyrlings. There's activity out in the Holds and several active CraftHalls. Arolos can let you play whichever Pern character type you've been craving to try out! History: Arolos was founded in the South nearly twenty turns ago at the beginning of the Eighth Pass. Of course, they were young and shiny then, and other Weyrs made a habit of using them as a place to get rid of their worse riders.
However, turns have passed, and in that time Arolos has managed to hammer out a certain amount of grudging respect. They've survived several disasters, become adept at working in the political shenanigans of quorums, and aren't even the Weyr everyone sends rejects to anymore (Ista stole that place!). In the meantime, Arolos goes on, cheerfully surviving day to day life. Additional Comments: We have a Threadfall coming up so adult riders would be great just now! Candidates are always welcome and we can make a home for anything else you're hankering to play also!
Be aware you're signing up for a heavy mail-load - Arolos is a busy game, but we're on hand to help you set up mail filters if needed!

Summer comes... and with it comes boredom, free time and plotting. A belated Midsummer Gather is starting at Arolos Weyr, held up by the arrival of evacuated Forters. Traders are setting up with their wares, and there's plenty to buy - if you have the marks to do so. To bind the Weyr together, competitive games have been announced for the Gather. Agility, stamina and speed will be tested over a number of races, as dragons try to win prizes for their Wings. But will the races encourage the Wings to work as teams, or will the result be even fiercer competition and resentment than before? Meanwhile, back at the Weyr, a freshly laid Clutch is being kept hidden by the possessive mother. But which will produce better Candidates; the military Fort style, the relaxed Arolos teaching, or a mixture of the two? Changes are underway, and not everyone is happy about it! Join us! We've plenty of ways for you to spend your long, lazy summer hours - and once you're here, we're sure you'll never want to leave. arolosweyr.co.uk

An influx of wild whers and firelizards has Holders upset and the Weyr trying to work out what to do. They can't be allowed to eat Hold stock, and too many wild whers can be dangerous - but then, what is the best and safest way to deal with them? Do we explore and find somewhere safe to move them to, or is there a better solution?
We're happy to take all characters from Candidates to Crafters to riders (we even have active kitchen staff!) If you've got a character idea burning in your brain then come and check us out - we'd love to have you!

Riders trying to fight Fall with substandard firestone - as likely to cause problems as it is to actually kill the Thread. Weyrlings preparing to move out on their own for the first time, and encountering new neighbours who might be awesome or as terrible as anyone you've ever had the misfortune to live next to. A Lord Holder trying to deal diplomatically with the Weyrwoman while cordially hating her. Candidates preparing for a new Clutch while their CandidateMasters try to warn them that if they have second thoughts now is the time to state them - there won't be time later on! Arolos is a canon Pern game based in the Eighth Pass. The fact that we're still running on email groups says that we're old-style, and at fifteen years old you might expect that. We don't go outside the traditional canon colours, and other than girls on blues we stick pretty firmly to the canon gender-based Impressing. But in fifteen years we've had time to get really REALLY good at plotting. What you can expect at Arolos changes from month to month. Over the years we've had earthquakes and volcanoes, murderers and forgeries, political tensions and careful manuevering. Our Weyrleaders have varied between awesome, incompetant, evil and just too young to take seriously. Our Candidates and Weyrlings, even after fifteen years, still surprise their teachers by getting into entirely new types of trouble. Life goes on. If you're looking for a canon group which is guaranteed not to shut down overnight, join us. Don't worry about not knowing how to play by email - we'll show you and filters make life beautifully easy. Don't worry about fitting in to an established group either - our players are always excited by new members and you're likely to be inundated with offers to write. Whatever character you'd like to write, give us a try - and maybe it'll be your plot I'm advertising next! groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/arolosweyr/infowww.arolosweyr.co.uk

What kind of Candidate do you want to write? The type who takes it all incredibly seriously and is prepared to tell tales on those who don't, or the kind who just scraped in to the minimum age by three days and still wants to monkey around? Is your kid the one who sits at the back of the class making fart noises, or is she the one who is late for lessons due to trying to complete her essay at the last minute? Does he avoid exercise as though it were a dirty word, or does she get up at 6AM in order to try and keep in perfect shape? Is she a bully with those smaller and weaker, or does he avoid confrontation wherever possible? Male or female, baby-faced 12 year old or solemn 23 year old, Hold, Craft or Weyr born, Arolos has room - and maybe a dragon - for you. With a clutch of eggs on the Sands, and a stern-faced Candidate Master trying to convince his charges that dragonriding is not to be taken lightly, there's plenty of fun - and trouble! - to be had before Hatching day. Whether you want to write a kid who is top of the class or one who copies his work from whoever he can convince to allow it, come and join us. Arolos is an Eighth-Pass Pern game, old-fashioned enough to still be running by email and through YahooGroups (We have an excuse for old-fashioned - we're fifteen years old this month! ;-) We're an active game, with members happy to welcome newcomers and walk them through how to use YahooGroups when needed. We don't do post-counts, we don't have minimum word-counts, and we understand that RL is a thing that affects us all on occasion. Whether you're a new or returning member, you're always welcome to poke your nose back in groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/arolosweyr/infoarolosweyr.co.uk/arolos.php?p=viewclutch.php

Discovery of a Weyr lost under volcanic rock many centuries ago brings excitement when it's found to be full of strange curiosities - tiny paintings too detailed and realistic for any artist to replicate, pictures of dragons that are weirdly small, medical equipment beyond the standards of the Eighth Pass. And maybe it would have remained as that - a thing of curiosity alone, used for research and no more than that. But Fort Weyr is in desperate need of leadership, with the other Weyrs working extra Falls to try to cover their workload. With the last attempt to install a Weyrwoman using a goldflight a failure, will Arolos risk going back to find someone who could take the job? And if they do, what will they find when they get there? Do you want to turn back the clock? See what an Eighth Pass character would make of someone from a much earlier Pass? Do you fancy yourself capable of convincing someone to leave behind everything they've ever known to step into the future? Come and join us! arolosweyr.co.uk

In the Second Pass, Sef Weyr (The Southern Experimental Facility) was small, because it was never actually a proper Weyr at all. Positioned all the way over in the South it was intended as a place where geneticists could work but also keep their creations effectively quarantined; ensuring no cross-breeding with the general dragon population until they were sure it was safe. That was important because there was the occasional oddity in the attempts at increasing Clutch size; two-headed fetus dragons for example, or twin dragons in one egg but both too small to break the shell. But we must be clear, what we are talking here is experimentation on humans and dragons. Sometimes there were miscarriages. Sometimes eggs didn’t Hatch. Sometimes babies of both species arrived and lived a few days and then died. While the Second Pass acknowledges that this work is needed, because they can already see a time in the future where they haven’t got enough flamethrowers and hovercraft to make up the gap, it is not pleasant. If they succeed well, then they would be heroes, but as the end of the Pass nears the next Pass is a long way in the future anyway. Sef Weyr starts looking more and more like Pern’s dirty little secret, the one no-one wants to really acknowledge that a Conclave at the beginning of the Pass agreed was needed. Of course, they only saw that more dragons would be needed to fight Thread. Bigger dragons could help, but while they knew that the dragons would increase in size over time, that growth was slower than they had hoped, and attempts to speed up the process had met with dismal failure. They have only two golds; the Weyrwoman and her junior (oddly, it’s not particularly easy to convince goldriders to come let their dragons be experimented on). There are also a lot of very smart people; not riders but geneticists, doctors and engineers desperately trying to hang on to the knowledge that they know was there in First Pass but which is already starting to slip away from them. They can’t always replicate what they know the First Pass had; they don’t have the materials or they don’t have full knowledge - there are annoying gaps - but they know they used to have it and that is almost more annoying than never having had it at all. Into this arrive riders from the Eighth Pass, a whole six Passes ahead, on dragons so large it's hard to get your head around it. They talk about a volcano, due to go off any time now. They want you to come into the future with them for slightly suspicious sounding reasons of their own. They talk about an empty Weyr, a place you could have all to yourselves, people who will most certainly be grateful you came. They are oddly unwilling to go into detail about technology in their own time but it can't be that bad, can it? Can it? After all, they've clearly at least worked out time travel. groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Arolosweyr/infoarolosweyr.co.uk/arolos.php?p=articles/display_article.php&id=520Join us and come back to the future.
